Doc Merrick is the founder of CRC Basketball which encompasses player development, coaching instruction and the annual Cancer Research Classic (an invitational high school basketball tournament televised nationally). His knowledge of the game, passion and excellent communication skills have made him a sought after clinician and speaker. Doc has worked with players from middle school through the professional ranks and has been instrumental in preparing numerous high school athletes both academically and athletically for college basketball. He also developed Moving Up, a didactic seminar for student athletes and their parents detailing the physical, mental and academic skills necessary for college basketball. Away from basketball, Doc Merrick is the executive director of the Urologic Research Institute and is an internationally renowned physician in prostate cancer treatment and research. Merrick has published in excess of 400 scientific articles in peer review journals, has authored 2 text books, has lectured extensively throughout the United States and Europe and has diagnosed and/or treated patients from 42 states and 17 foreign countries.

The Cancer Research Classic is known as the nation's premier Catholic high school event and includes very successful programs and highly-ranked prospects.

Players from all over the country came in with big reputations, and they did not disappoint. The nation's No. 1 player Jahlil Okafor, No. 5 Emmanuel Mudiay and No. 12 D'Angelo Russell all shined bright. Under the direction of Doc Merrick, this event continues to grow and is recognized as a main attraction after the new year.

Organizers have announced the participants and matchups for the seventh annual Cancer Research Classic, scheduled for Jan. 3-4, 2014 in Wheeling, W.Va.

Headliners include MaxPreps academy national champ Montverde Academy (Fla.) and potential preseason Xcellent 25 No. 1 Whitney Young (Chicago).

West Virginia's Cancer Research Classic will feature one of the biggest games of the year as Jabari Parker and Simeon (Chicago) take on Montverde Academy (Fla.). A showdown between a pair of likely preseason No. 1s highlights the 2013 Cancer Research Classic to be held Jan. 4-5 in Wheeling, W.Va.

Wheeling Jesuit University will play host to 19 teams over two days in one of the biggest showcases of the 2012-13 season, headlined by a clash between three-time defending Illinois Class 4A state champion Simeon (Chicago) and Kevin Boyle's loaded Montverde Academy (Fla.) squad.

For more than 30 minutes, Rice sat in the Wheeling Jesuit University locker room searching for answers. The Raiders have built a tradition built on hard-nosed defense and great guard play, but the perennial CHSAA powerhouse hasn't gotten that on a consistent basis this season.
